Asian pears are native to China, Japan, and Korea, and look almost like an apple with speckled skin, but are more firm than regular pears. They have a mildly sweet flavor with a crisp, grainy texture and are commonly served raw and peeled. Great in salads, desserts, and eaten in hand.
They are grown mostly in Fresno, Tulare, and Kern Counties. You can find them at the farmers' market in the fall months, directly from the farm to you, and in varieties that are not usually available in the store!
