Fragrantly sweet, strawberries are the most popular type of berry fruit in the world. Although they have become increasingly available year-round, they are at the peak of their season from spring to fall – when they are the most flavorful and abundant. They offer the benefit of high antioxidant and vitamin C amounts, as well as manganese and fiber.
California varieties include:
Albion: Fruit from “Albion” is typically long, conical, and very symmetrical. Albion fruit is firm and is dark red inside and out.
Monterey: Slightly larger but less firm than fruits from Albion. Outstanding flavor with a distinct sweet aftertaste that is unique among California cultivars.
Chandler: Semi-early, deliciously sweet fruit. Fruit size is medium to large and medium in firmness.
Fronteras: Adapted to the fall planting and winter production system of the California coast. Large, bright red berries, very sweet.
