Avocados are quintessentially California. Grown on the sloping hills of the state, they are synonymous with our cuisine. These buttery pear-shaped fruits have a nutty flavor, making them the perfect companion to just about any meal.
Add them to soups, salads, tacos, or even eat them plain for a healthy and delicious snack! Typically in season during hot summer days, the common varieties you’ll find at your local farmers’ market are Hass, Fuerte, and Sir Prize.
California avocados are particularly special because less than 1 percent of the state is suitable for growing them. The trees require only the richest of rich soil, fresh coastal breezes, and sun. Your farmers bring only the best to the farmers' market!

Avoid fruit with dark blemishes on the skin or over-soft fruit. Gently squeeze the fruit in the palm of your hand. Ripe, ready-to-eat fruit will be firm yet will yield to gentle pressure. Wash before eating.
