The pomegranate is a true superfruit that is definitely worth the trouble of cracking open and eating seed by seed. Pomegranates contain vast amounts of antioxidants and other nutritious compounds. Selecting a ripe pomegranate is important as they do not continue to ripen after they have been picked.
You can find whole pomegranates as well as pomegranate juice at the farmers' markets from as early as September to February.
This succulent fruit was brought to California by Spanish missionaries centuries ago and is now widely cultivated throughout the state. The largest concentration of pomegranate farming takes place in the San Joaquin Valley.
